Nautical Images – Paintings of the Sea (2019)
Benoît Donne

Benoît Donne was born in 1959 and descended from a family of military officers, half Breton, half Norman. Quickly attracted to sea and ships, he decided to make it his profession. He joined the French Merchant Maritime Academy in Le Havre in 1978, from where he graduated in 1980, then sailed with the Compagnie Générale Maritime, on board all types of ships until 1990, when he was recruited by the French owner of Services and Transport to serve on their new sailing Cruise Ship, Club Med 1. He then monitored the building of Club Med 2, before taking command of Club Med 1 in 1996 until her sale in 1998; then of Club Med 2 and of Paul Gauguin.

His taste for painting, which may have come to him from his Grand Uncle Georges Dufour, appeared in 1988 during the great oceanic crossings, when brushes and watercolors occupied his spare time. In 2005, his encounter with watercolor artist, Jean Pierre Rémon, revitalized his production. Eager for discoveries, he began acrylic painting in 2008. He has since used both techniques to paint scenes and subjects inspired by his passion for the sea and ships. His great inspirations remain British and Dutch maritime painters Julian Taylor, Stephen J. Card, Harvey Crossley, Robert Lloyd and Ronald van Rikxoort.
Benoît Donne is a member of the French Académie des Arts et Sciences de la Mer. This book presents a collection of Benoît Donne’s finest maritime paintings.
