One Hundred and Forty-Five Years Holland America Line (2018)
Albert J. Schoonderbeek
Captain Albert Schoonderbeek decided to go to sea when he was seven years old. At that time, he was collecting postcards and came across a card of the Nieuw Amsterdam of 1938. Those yellow funnels and rows of lifeboats brought about a fascination with ships that has remained with him until the present day. While the collection grew, he discovered that Holland America still existed, and he decided to combine hobby and career. In 1976 he entered the oldest Maritime Academy in the world, The Kweekschool voor de Zeevaart in Amsterdam, and graduated in 1981. Shortly after, he joined Holland America as a 4th. Officer. In 1998 he co-authored “125 years of Holland America Line” documenting the complete history of the company. He was promoted to Captain in 2000 and remained in command until 2014. Then the function of Traveling Master became available which entails rotating over the fleet to provide training and support.
For the 145th anniversary of his company, HAL-captain Schoonderbeek produced a book for the 29th lustrum jubilee of the historic shipping firm. The book contains 147 page-spreads, each dedicated to one year of the company, plus one each for 1871, 1872 for the forebear of the HAL. The book contains 294+ pages of historic highlights of the company and its large fleet, with 147 rare, interesting pictures from the archives, not recently published in any other HAL-book.
