Rotterdam – Mainport of Europe (2016)
Ronald van Rikxoort
Ronald van Rikxoort’s roots lie in and around IJsselmonde (i.e., the mouth of the river IJssel; today a part of Rotterdam. As a young boy, he was fascinated by the large and lively port. He regularly stayed with relatives who took him to the harbor. There he was impressed by the ships, the smells and colors, the atmosphere and activity. Later in life, the large port city of Rotterdam continued to attract and inspire him. It was therefore not surprising that he developed into an artist and designer, who found his subjects mainly in freight and passenger shipping.
He graduated from the Maastricht Academy of Fine Arts. His pictures of ships, harbours and seascapes have earned him international recognition and admiration as a maritime artist.
He strives to perfect his unique, almost impressionist style that is expressed in his work, sometimes powerfully and sometimes dreamily. Thanks to good contacts with the crew of a water boat for the Rotterdam Waterweg area, he criss-crosses the ports and sketches and photographs scenes to his heart’s content. In this way he constantly gains new inspiration for his numerous watercolors and acrylic paintings. This book of 80 colourful watercolours of the Rotterdam harbour is compiled from his rich body of work.
