Steam & Canvas – Masterly Paintings (2017)
Stephen J. Card
Born in Bermuda, Stephen Card spent the first part of his professional life at sea, first as a mate and later as a captain. In 1982 he came ashore in Bermuda to become Queen’s Harbour Master. In 1984 he decided to pursue his lifelong interest in painting. Largely self-taught and working in oils, he prefers to devote the bulk of his time to painting a wide variety of ships of the steam era, mainly the great ocean liners of the 20th century. A great portion of his time has been spent creating a unique collection of paintings of Holland- America Line’s great ships, His paintings can be found on board the vessels of Carnival Cruise Line, Costa Crociere and Saga Cruises, as well as in the Bermuda Maritime Museum and many other corporate and private collections in Bermuda and abroad.
Card’s book, Canvas and Steam, contains a collection of some of his finest and most recent paintings. They include White Star’s Adriatic, the immortal Titanic, the beloved Queen Mary in wartime and the classic Nieuw Amsterdam triumphantly returning to her homeport of Rotterdam in 1946 after long years of strenuous military service. Many smaller passenger ships are also featured in Card’s latest collection – such as the Canadian Lady Rodney and the combo passenger-cargo ships Scanpenn and Newfoundland. For more recent liners, there are superb views of the likes of the Raffaello, Northern Star, Queen Elizabeth II and Sagafjord (and as seen, in her later life, the Saga Rose). Some one hundred of Card’s most iconic paintings ships are included in this outstanding book.
