The Ships We Built (2018)
Pia van Haarlem

The world-famous Dutch shipyard ‘Koninklijke Maatschappij De Scheld’ (Royal Schelde) was founded in 1875 in the town of Vlissingen in the Dutch province of Zeeland. Over the past 145 years some 420 vessels were designed and constructed there. Each of the 420 ships has its own chapter, mostly illustrated with several unique pictures, and in a few cases, where no photograph could be found in the archives, a detailed drawing or a general plan. This is a colourful, detailed encyclopedic book that presents the general characteristics of each ship. The most famous ships included are the Royal Rotterdam Lloyd’s Willem Ruys (1947) and Sweden America Line’s mv Kungsholm (1953).
